[FULL ALBUM] Music Review | Raees | Ram Sampath, JAM8

The hype is real for this movie. Does it matter to me? No. What matters to me is whether Ram Sampath and JAM8 managed to overpower that hype with their music. We'll find that out at the end of this post.

Album Release Date: 23rd January 2017

Laila Main Laila
Music Composer: Ram Sampath
Singer: Pawni Pandey
Lyrics: Indeevar
What romantic movies does to women, porn does to men. This song brings together both of these - king of romance and (ex)-queen of porn (no disrespect but it seems that was the intention here). Does the song fail to impress in terms of music (obviously it has already impressed in other terms)? The catchphrase tune and the choir parts are really addictive. This song doesn't give Pawni Pandey (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs finalist) a chance to showcase her singing prowess with overpowering music but it does open up a lot of opportunities for her.

Music Composer: JAM8
Singer: Arijit Singh, Harshdeep Kaur
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
The song starts with the chorus which is a bit odd to get used to. It takes a few listens. Post that, Arijit Singh takes care of the rest of it. The is one of the songs where Urdu verses are used really well. The real charm of this song is the antara when Harshdeep Kaur joins Arijit. The ending is just as odd as the start of the song is.

Music Composer: Ram Sampath
Singer: Sukhwinder Singh, Bhoomi Trivedi, Karsan Sagathia
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
A Gujarati festival song, picturised on two Muslim actors, sung by a Punjabi and written by a Muslim. This is the first makar sankranti song I've heard post Kaipoche (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) in a Bollywood movie. However, I feel any Gujarati folk styled song can be easily turned in a navratri song and that is what happened with this one too. Heck, it's even picturised as navratri song but promoted as sankranti song. The only disappointing part of the song were the gujarati portions by Karsan Sagathia, not the singing but the lyrics.

Music Composer: JAM8
Singer: Mika Singh
Lyrics: Mayur Puri
The way this song started I thought "Yes, finally the theme song for the badass character of Raees". I was proved wrong as soon as dhol beats entered. Well, the music is what will be played as theme throughout the movie but this song was kind of a disappointment. I would've liked to have this song in a lower scale to create that sense of power and fear.

Music Composer: Ram Sampath
Singer: Ram Sampath, Tarannum Malik
Lyrics: Ram Sampath, Hiral Brahmbhatt
Another attempt at creating THE song for the character of Raees. Another failed attempt. When I read the title of the song, I thought it'll have major lyrics in gujarati but that's the only line in gujarati. Also, I've got a problem with having a chorus which just says "RAEES" eight times.

Music Composer: JAM8
Singer: K. K.
Lyrics: Manoj Yadav
This song has been written in retrospection. With the decisions he's taken throughout his life, this song is trying to show the character of Raees retrospecting his life from where he is right now. When you have K. K. singing, you dare not doubt if the song would be mellow and soothing (yet hurtful in a sense). I can just drown in his singing and the lyrics of this song. Beautiful one!

Singer: Roshan Rathod
Lyrics: Traditional
This is a spinoff to a traditional gujarati song of the same name and lyrics. If you've heard the original one by any chance you'll die hard laughing at it. To simplify, it's a (good) remixed version of the original one. I am not sure how the song will fit into the movie. My wildest guess would be it could be used as a background to fight scenes.

The album started off really well. I enjoyed the first three songs that were released earlier. Raees being a character driven movie like Don, Don 2 and Once Upon A Time in Mumbai (not the second one please), I was expecting a dark and serious music album. This turned out more commercial than I expected. What I liked was that despite being a character driven movie and despite having a love story, the album is not jacked up with romantic songs unlike M. S. Dhoni - The Untold Story. What I didn't like was the half-hearted effort towards gujarati songs. Nonetheless, here are my favourites from the album:
Laila Main Laila
Zaalima
Saanson Ke
